WARTHOG

Famous for their role as "Pumbaa" in The Lion King, warthogs are much more fascinating in real life! Their name comes from the wart-like bumps on their faces - these are actually thick skin growths that protect them during fights with other males.

Warthogs are surprisingly fast and agile, capable of running up to 55 km/h! They're also very intelligent animals that live in family groups called sounders. When they run, their tails stick straight up like an antenna, helping family members stay together.

Unlike other pigs, warthogs kneel on their front knees to graze and eat. They also use abandoned burrows for shelter, backing in first so their sharp tusks face the entrance to scare off predators!

📍 WHERE WILL YOU FIND THEM

Find our warthog family at pen W9, near the African savannah exhibit. They're most active during morning feeding at 9:30am!
