Gemsbok Antelope

GEMSBOK

The gemsbok, also known as the oryx, is a large antelope native to the arid regions of southern Africa. Its striking coat features a mix of tan and white with dramatic black markings on the face and legs.

These magnificent animals are perfectly adapted to desert life - they can survive with very little water by extracting moisture from the vegetation they consume and can raise their body temperature to avoid sweating. Their long, straight horns can reach up to 120cm and are used for defense against predators.

Gemsboks are social animals, often found in herds of 10-40 individuals. They are known for their impressive speed and agility, capable of running up to 60 km/h when threatened.

📍 WHERE WILL YOU FIND THEM

You will find the gemsbok at pen G5, near the savannah exhibit. Best viewing times are early morning and late afternoon.
